Preparing for Your Internship Abroad

An international internship can provide invaluable preparation either for further study or for your career. But how do you prepare for the internship itself? While most students are excited by the prospect of seeing the world and immersing themselves in a foreign culture, it’s understandable to experience some trepidation, as well. You naturally want to make the most of your internship experience, and for the entire process to be as smooth as possible. Here are a few tips for achieving that goal.

How to Prepare for an International Internship

  • Review airline guidelines in advance. Well before you pack your bags and head to the airport, study up on any regulations provided by your airline, including guidelines about the weight and size of carry-ons, etc. This can make your takeoff day go much more smoothly.
  • Learn the language. You’ll find it much easier to get around, and ultimately glean more from the internship experience, if you take the time to learn the native tongue. Contact ALZEA INDIA to learn more about our in-house language school.
  • Get some experience close to home. If you’re heading off for an international internship in the hotel industry, it may be worthwhile to look for a job or internship in a local hotel, first; gaining a little bit of prior experience can make your internship more advantageous.
  • Document your experience. You may assume that you’ll remember everything that happens during your internship, but you won’t! It’s bound to be an overwhelming experience, and to make sure you preserve as much as possible, plan on keeping a journal or a blog. Photo-documentation is also highly encouraged.
  • Spend plenty of time with locals. Whether it’s the people you meet at your internship site or a host family you stay with, spend as much time as you can interacting with local people. This is the best way to really immerse yourself in a new culture. Along the same lines, make sure you don’t spend too much time just talking with your friends in your own language. Step out of your comfort zone as much as possible.
  • Don’t neglect your host city. It can be all too tempting to look for cheap flights for a weekend trip to a nearby, exotic location, but make sure you’re really soaking up all the sights and experiences in your host city.
  • Exercise healthy habits. The last thing you want is to spend a big chunk of your internship sick in bed or feeling depleted and run-down. Make sure you stick to healthy eating habits, allow yourself eight hours of sleep at night, and try to make some time for a little physical activity each day.
  • Try new foods. Simple, but so important: Take advantage of every opportunity you can to partake in local cuisine!
  • Minimize social networking. There’s definitely nothing wrong with keeping in touch with friends and family back home, and social networking can be a great way to do so. With that said, you don’t want to spend so much time social networking that you miss real, in-the-moment experiences in a new country. Try to limit your app or computer exposure to certain times of the day.

These are just a few guidelines we’d recommend for any student looking toward an international internship. If you have any questions or want to start making plans for your own internship abroad, reach out to ALZEA INDIA today.
